Norfolk rugby star Freddie Steward hopes the 'excitement and madness' of the Six Nations comes across as he stars in a new Netflix series.

The 23-year-old was alongside England team-mate Marcus Smith to discuss Six Nations: Full Contact on The One Show on BBC One on Monday evening.

The documentary followed last year's tournament and is being released on Wednesday ahead of this year's crunch clashes getting started.

It promises to deliver a never-before-seen look at what goes on behind the scenes of elite rugby union, with viewers given fly-on-the-wall access and a deeper look at the players' lives on and off the pitch.

The series is set to make new stars out of the players it features, and one of those is former Norwich School pupil Steward.

The full-back, from Longham, near Dereham, started playing rugby as a youngster at Swaffham and Holt and has already racked up 31 England caps.

“It’s great for rugby to open the doors. The fans get to see this side of the players that they don’t necessarily get to see," the Leicester Tigers back told presenters Lauren Laverne and Gethin Jones.

"As players, we have a responsibility to grow the game as well. We want new crowds, we want fans coming in.

"So it’s nice for us to show that side of the sport and the excitement that comes with rugby, the madness that comes with it too.”

Steward was named in the World Rugby Dream Team of the Year in 2022 and has been named England's Player of the Year at the end of the last two seasons.

He has been named in Steve Borthwick's squad ahead of this year's Six Nations, which starts for England in Italy on Saturday, February 3.

Preparations are well under way, with Steward adding: “We’re off to Girona, off to sunny Spain, which will be nice. Catch a bit of winter sun!”
