Norfolk County Council has issued a number of warnings about new scams this week.

Here is a round-up of some of the cons you should be aware of.

Facebook posts offering £250 Asda vouchers

People have been reporting Facebook posts which claim to offer "£250 Asda vouchers".

The posts contain a link which take users to a 'survey' which they must complete as part of the claim.

These questions are used to gather personal and financial information.

Scammers hunting victims in WhatsApp group chats 

Norfolk County Council has reshared a caution from Action Fraud about scammers using WhatsApp group chats to coerce victims.

Scammers are said to be creating fake WhatsApp profiles pretending to be peoples' loved ones.

They use this fake profile to gain their victims' trust.

Once they have built a relationship, the scammers ask their victims to send them a "one time passcode" so they can register them for a group video call.

In reality, sharing this code will enable the scammer to transfer your account to another device so they can take it over. 

Action Fraud has received more than 630 reports of these scams so far this year.

Doorstep cold callers offering gutter work and home improvements

On May 15, two males cold called a property in the Great Yarmouth area offering to clean its gutters for a low fee.

After the homeowner gave them access to the roof, they returned saying they had found damage and quoted £1,200 for the repairs, insisting they could start straight away.

Fortunately the homeowner declined the offer and the cold callers left in a plain white van.

People in the Beeston Regis area have also reported cold callers appearing at their homes offering home improvements.

Norfolk County Council is therefore reminding people not to deal with doorstep cold callers. 

Telephone cold calls offering loft insulation

Last week, someone in Norfolk reported receiving a phone call in which the caller said they "needed to arrange a visit" to "check insulation which had previously been installed".

The cold caller then claimed the insulation had been "causing damp" and was a "risk to health".

If you believe someone has tried to scam you with a fake telephone call, email or text, you can call the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 0808 223 1133.

You can forward suspicious emails to the National Cyber Security Centre by forwarding them to report@phishing.gov.uk.
