Plans for a new recycling facility at a former quarry - to take waste from construction sites and recycle it to be used elsewhere - have been lodged.

Wymondham-based Skillplane Ltd is seeking permission for the site at land to the south of the B1108 Norwich Road, near Carbrooke.

The company has asked Norfolk County Council for temporary permission for the aggregate recycling facility, as it looks to expand the facilities it currently operates from a leased site at West Carr Road in Attleborough.

The company wants to use the Carbrooke site, a former quarry which was restored to a greenfield site in 2003, on a temporary basis for the next five years.

Documents lodged with County Hall state: "The site will intake inert construction and demolition waste such as concrete, bricks, soil, stones, sands and gravels from construction sites in the local area.

"The waste will be processed and stored in the short term before it is delivered for reuse on other construction sites.

"The applicant's existing clients are mainly small house builders and groundworks companies within the Breckland and South Norfolk districts."

The company wants permission to recycle up to 10,000 tonnes of aggregates each year.

Skillplane Ltd has been using the site, which it owns, from 7am until 6pm Monday to Fridays and from 8am to noon on Saturdays.

But it has ceased operations there pending the planning decision.

Documents submitted to the council state: "The applicant is applying for this permission to allow them to meet the demand of their existing customer base and therefore do not need to identify new demand to make the project feasible, as demonstrated by the recent use of the site prior to planning permission."

The county council, which has sparked controversy with its plans to change how it charges for trade waste at its own tips, will make a decision on whether to grant the permission in due course.
